Életfa Hungarian Folk Band is one of the premier Hungarian folk bands in North America. The group's members treat their audiences to an entertaining tour of Hungary's folk music, song and dance culture, guided throughout by engaging narrative and demonstrations. The group's members specialize in and present the authentic, archaic folklore from the villages of present-day Hungary, Transylvania, Romania, Slovakia and beyond. The members of Eletfa are all driven by their love and respect for Hungarian folk music and dance, the importance in preserving Hungarian dance, music and culture in North America, and the dedication to performing and spreading the joy of music, song and dance.
Eletfa means 'Tree of Life' and is an archaic Hungarian folk art symbol used as an ornament at major occaisions such as weddings, christenings and funerals. In this way, the symbaolic tree witnesses the passing of generations, linking together all Hungarians.
The band was formed over sixteen years ago in the New York/New Jersey area by a group of multi-talented performers, utilizing such instruments as violin, viola, 3-stringed kontra, cello, 3-stringed bass, percussive cello, and cimbalom, together with beautiful vocals.
